PRACTICE AND PROGRESSION
Shooting Drills
Step One - Form Shooting
Spend the first 5 minutes shooting from 4-5 feet from the basket. Focus on ball releasing off of the same shooting finger each time, getting the ball up and over the front of the rim, and completing the shooting action in one fluid motion. Aim for 5 straight "swishes" from the left side, middle and right side. Once 5 at each spot becomes consistently easy, progress to 10.
Modified Ray Allen Drill - 5 "Lines" on the Court, 5 Spots in Each Line, 25 Total Shots. Start on the Left Baseline, about 4-5 Feet from the Basket for Your First Shot, Moving Further Back After Each Shot Until You Have Taken 5 Shots, and the Final Shot Comes From Behind the 3-Pt. Line. Move to the Left Wing, Top of the Key, Right Wing and Finish on Right Baseline. If You Have A Partner, You Can Also Do This Drill, But Can't Move " Back" Until You Have Made the Shot, Keeping Track of How Many Shot it Takes to Finish the Drill
Step Two - Partner Shooting
One of the easiest ways to get up as many shots as possible, without a shooting gun, is to find 1-2 other people to work on shooting with. This allows for more shots in a shorter time frame, improving conditioning and allows for you to practice more game like shots. Some drills to focus on are:
Michigan Shooting - 5 Shots at 5 Spots Around the 3-Pt. Line. Consistently Keep Track of Makes Every Time You Do This Drill.
Celtic Shooting - 5 Spots Around the 3-Pt. Line. Shooter Must Make 2 Consecutive Shots at Each Spot Before Moving On to the Next Spot. The Objective is to Go Around the 3-Pt. Line and Back in 2 Minutes.
3-Pt License - 10 3-Pt Shots for each of the 5 Different Variations of 3-Pt Shots,
10 Shots - Around the World
10 Shots - Backpedal to 1/2 Ct. from Top of the Key, Coming Immediately Back to the Top of the Key to Receive a Pass for a 3-Pt Shot
10 Shots - Wing-to-Wing. Focus on Going "Under" the FT Line When Moving From Wing-to-Wing as a Way to Work on Footwork. Don't Just Run Along the 3-Pt. Line
10 Shots -. Players Starts on the Left Side of the Jump Circle, just behind 1/2 Ct. Player Dribbles Towards the Sideline Left with Left Hand. When Player Gets to Sideline, Player Cross-Over Dribbles to Right Hand, Driving Towards to Wing, Dribbling Into a Pull-Up 3-Pt. Shot. Part of the Focus of This Drill is to Keep "Off-Hand" Close to Center of the Body to Ease Transitioning Into the Shooting Motion.
10 Shots - Repeat Same Steps as Previous, but From the Right Side of the Floor, Starting with Dribbling Towards Right Sideline with Right Hand.
